My Postpartum Hair Transformation – Spoilt Hair.

Looking back on my hair before falling pregnant, I want to slap myself for ever complaining about having a bad hair day. From the start of my second trimester, my hair was growing at a rapid pace, thickening by the day.

But then my tiny miracle baby was born, and as if it was all a dream, that new hair all started to evacuate, as if it realized it had checked in at the wrong place, and feeling slightly embarrassed, they packed up and left, never to return again.

I’ve never experienced hair loss the way that I did, and still do after pregnancy. I’ve never known my baby hair to be quite so stubborn – it grows out, and then regrows, and the cycle is never ending. My hair dry and brittle and the waves now seemingly totally uncoordinated – departing in every direction, except the way I wish for it to go.

Rewind a year, I was gifted a day at the salon. I had them do the ombre look which was so in at the time. I was this new semi-blonde bombshell, and I adored it. And then…it grew out. Weeks turned into months, months turned into a year. And then here we were. It took multiple days where I burst into tears when looking into the mirror. My hair drove me insane, and being a busy mom, I just couldn’t find the time each day to make it look good. I would still have my frequent hair cuts to try to keep it healthy, but would never leave happy. The tears would stream again. I felt that all hairdressers were out there to get me – to ruin my hair. They never listened.

Then, I heard about Spoilt Hair Salon in Green Point. I heard wonderful things about the salon, as well as the hairstylists, and I had to try it out for myself. Look – once one or two hairdressers mess up your hair, it’s incredibly hard to trust anybody again. But the hair was in dire need of saving, and this was my last hope.

I arrived to the friendliest faces. They welcomed me in as if I belonged there. A salon that has regulars popping in just to say hi to their stylists. A well behaved dog seated as if it wasn’t there beside his owner. Fresh greenery brightening up each mirror. A salon that has been around for so long, that their clients become their family.

Zainab was my stylist. I don’t usually enjoy chatting too much when I’m having treatments done, as I use it as my time away from my child to just relax and read – but I so loved chatting with her. She knew when silence was desired, and would just continue with the job at hand.

I requested a wash, treatment, balayage (to bring in a dash of blonde) and a blow-dry. My previously incredibly dry and tatty hair was transformed. There were no traces of the previous colour left behind, and looking in the mirror, I was lost for words.

It is a lengthy procedure, because they do it properly. But, not once did I feel like time was dragging on. I enjoyed every moment of being there, from the time I arrived, until the time I left. They are a water conscious salon, which means that they limit the length of time your hair is washed, and the amount of times they wash it. I am so impressed by this, as it can be a challenge at a salon.

They also have a nail bar in the salon – many women were having their nails done while their foils were in their hair, which is such a lovely idea. They do have wifi, so I also noticed quite a number of ladies getting work done while having their hair done.
They are also known for their Easihair Pro extensions, which are 100% Remy Human hair extensions. They have the incredible ability in matching them with your hair colour, and making them look totally natural.

I have no words to describe the smell of my hair once it was done – as they use only the best products in your hair. A mixture between toffee and finished off with a light spray that smelt like I had just stepped out of the Carribean – coconut and pineapple.

Imagine having your hair done in California, New York or LA. This is the feel that I get when visiting and stepping out of Spoilt. It was just the change and time that I needed to reboot, get my confidence back and to face life as a busy mom again.

I thoroughly enjoyed the vibe in the salon, the music wasn’t too loud, and everyone was happy and passionate about what they were doing. The compliments are still streaming in when people see me. I really do love my new look – and I am so happy to have FINALLY found a new stylist and hair salon that I feel I can trust with my hair. Something that we so take fore granted, and often neglect.

Take this as a reminder to book your next hair appointment. If funds are tight, put some money aside each month so that you can look after yourself. As moms, and busy women, we really do need to invest in ourselves more often. Our wellbeing is what makes us the person that we are.

I can’t recommend Zainab at Spoilt Hair adequately. I of course, cannot give my honest feedback on any of the other stylists because I haven’t had my hair done by them yet, but everyone leaving the salon looked gorgeous, and they certainly do keep coming back.

They love to share transformation photos on their social media sites, so check them out here:

Thank you Zainab for such a wonderful afternoon, and for restoring my hair and my confidence. Shoneez, you should be incredibly proud of the phenomenal hair salon you have, with the most incredible stylists.

Stepping Off Of The Island In Bohemian Style.

P108.61059-Edit
Managing to find a garment quite so beautiful for my postpartum body was like winning the lottery. Shopping online and finding that perfect match made my find just that much more special. Like it was just meant to be.

The dresses that I came across on local online store – My Scattered Heart make me feel as if I have stepped out of Greece, Rome or perhaps a beautiful bohemian island – my happy places.

They flow with each step I take. They flatter my body – curves and all, and most importantly, they have the rare ability to leaving me feeling beautiful. Confidence comes from each stride.

P108.61071-Edit

P108.530-EditThen I came across their beautiful swimwear, and again the beauty, simplicity and island perfection of it caught me off guard. Again – their cut and fit left me NOT feeling like a mom wearing a swimsuit, but rather a woman – sexy and confident.

Their caftan’s lightweight and gentle against your skin. There to simply cover you up, but to still leave you looking irresistible at the same time. A must have for in your wardrobe, or for when you check ‘island hopping’ off of your bucket list. Perfect for all body shapes and sizes.

This swimsuit left me feeling ready to take on any beach or pool side, whilst sipping on a cocktail.

My Scattered Heart is home to a handful of the most gorgeous bohemian styled dresses and swimwear in South Africa. They have also recently introduced their bridal range, which I feel is totally versatile and unique. I love that they could easily be worn again for a different occasion, and that they don’t break the bank for a wedding dress! They are simple, yet breathtaking, and on the right bride – they would be exquisite!

Look out for some later posts with two other garments from My Scattered Heart. They are just as beautiful. You can keep up to date with me on my Instagram account.

Summer With Topshop.

Today, I am sharing something slightly different with you. This isn’t a product review nor a competition, but rather just a few outfits I love from Topshop SA that I shot with Tegan Smith Photography.

IMG_3337

The skirt has such a beautiful movement when the breeze catches it, and I really found that the monochrome stripes just complimented my body so well – making me look slim and tall! The slight flare to the arm of the black top was subtle but gorgeous. And the pastel pink shoes – I am obsessed! The entire outfit is perfect for a night out with the girls. Daff did a casual half up-do hairstyle and very natural makeup for this look.

This second look was a little edgy in comparison to my usual choice of outfit, but I loved it! I was a bit skeptical about wearing a dress that had a small opening, however, it is in the perfect position, which means it flaunts the non postpartum part of my tummy. The floral print is perfect for summer, and the leather jacket just ups it’s edginess a little. I loved the cute pastel pink clutch which complimented my shoes perfectly. I just wore my hair down for this look and again, my makeup is simple.

If you are a mom who is reading this, DO dress up, and DO sometimes follow that urge you have to get a little bit adventurous with your outfits. I had so much fun.

All of these looks (head to toe) are available at Topshop SA. So, it is super easy for you to get the complete outfit by simply popping into their store.

Look out for the next 3 looks coming soon!

Birthday Pampering – Rouge Day Spa

The hype from my 25th birthday two weeks ago is finally fading away, and the fatigue has set in after my sons third birthday last weekend. I think I was on some sort of high, perhaps some supernatural Adrenalin that ad kicked in that kept me going. Birthday party planning and semi-renovating our home at the same time. Call me crazy.

But, the one thing that hasn’t faded is my beautiful gelish nails that I had done as an early birthday treat at Rouge Day Spa a couple days before my birthday. What better way to spoil a girl and mom? Some down time, to herself to be pampered!

6

Rouge Day Spa has always been my go-to Spa. And, no! I’m NOT being paid to say that. Having been an old home before they bought it and transformed it into a cozy day spa, it’s just exactly what they call it: ‘Your home away from home’. It has become just that to me.

I get to sip on my HOT coffee in front of a fire without being interrupted by a toddler 46 times. I don’t have to get up even once to help him use the loo or to get him a drink, and then change the cup because it wasn’t the correct one. I can just close down the brain temporarily and be ALONE! It’s wonderful!

2

On a hot summer day, you can have your treatment and then stay for as long as you like after (get a babysitter!!!) and sip on a glass of champagne and have a swim in their gorgeous salt water pool.

They’re also home to my absolute favourite organic, natural spray tan – Vita Liberata!

IMG_1140

And, it gets better – you can even join them for a girls movie night with your girlfriends to watch chick flicks and have your nails done while munching on some popcorn. The benefit is that, again – you don’t have to worry about any small humans bothering you or having your husband changing channels while you’re watching your movie.

Rouge Day Spa is just a treat. It’s my escape, my place of sanity, and it’s all I find that I need once in awhile to reboot my energy and my sanity. Every mom needs a little time to invest in themselves in order to be a good wife/partner and mother.

7

On a side note,I also find that in comparison to the walk in spas that you find in shopping centers, my gelish stays fresh at least a week longer after having it done at Rouge. They use quality products and really do a fantastic job.

I’ve had many treatments at Rouge, and every single one of them has been flawless! I’m comfortable, relaxed and leave feeling sane and ready to face the world again.

Rouge Day Spa is located in Kenilworth, Cape Town and you can find their price list and treatments on their website:

PS. They also have loads of weekly specials and sell some amazing products at their salon!
